Home/Which test?
Free triage · no email requiredWhich asbestos test do I need?
Reviewed August 2026 · Ottawa, Ontario
Different jobs need different tests, and a contractor requirement is not the same as a homeowner's peace of mind. Answer three quick questions and we will tell you which asbestos test your situation calls for, roughly what it costs, and how fast it can move.
How this reads your answers
- Pre-disturbance jobs (renovation, popcorn, materials) need bulk sampling and accredited-lab PLM analysis.
- Loose attic vermiculite needs the multi-point protocol, not a single scoop.
- A construction or demolition project generally needs a Designated Substances Survey, and the owner is legally responsible for it.
- A disturbance or an abatement finish needs air testing (a fibre count / clearance), not bulk.
This is guidance, not a determination. Only accredited-lab analysis gives an actual result, and O. Reg. 278/05 obligations should be confirmed for your specific project.
Common questions
Do I always need an asbestos test?
For construction, renovation, or demolition that could disturb asbestos in a building of the relevant age, Ontario requires the material to be identified first, and contractors will require a report. For a small home job on an intact material you are simply leaving alone, testing is optional but often worth the certainty.
Bulk test or air test?
Bulk sampling identifies whether a material contains asbestos, and is what you use before disturbing it. Air testing measures fibre in the air, and is what you use after a disturbance or as clearance after abatement. This tool points you to the right one.
What is a Designated Substances Survey?
The survey the project owner must obtain before construction, renovation, or demolition in Ontario, determining whether designated substances are present so the information can go to every contractor bidding the work. Contractors on larger or commercial jobs will require it.
Is this tool a substitute for testing?
No. It is a quick way to decide which test your situation calls for. The accredited-lab analysis is what produces an actual answer.
