What to do, and not do, before testing

• Do not scrape, sand, or spray-wet-and-scrape a pre-1985 textured ceiling before it is tested. That is the exact action that releases fibre.
• Do not knock down a ceiling to "see how bad it is."
• Do keep it intact until you have the result. An undisturbed asbestos ceiling that stays painted and intact is low risk; a scraped one is not.

What it means if it is positive

A positive popcorn ceiling is not an emergency if it is intact and you are not disturbing it. Your options are to leave it alone, cover it (some people install a new ceiling below), or have it removed by a licensed abatement contractor.
