Why vermiculite is a special case

Not every batch is positive, but enough is that any loose pebbly attic fill of that era is treated as suspect until a lab says otherwise.

Because the contamination is not uniform through the material, a single scoop can miss it. Vermiculite requires a multi-point, full-depth sampling protocol, several samples taken through the depth of the fill at multiple locations, so the analysis actually represents what is up there. That is why it is priced above a simple bulk sample.

Do not disturb it

• Do not go into the attic to inspect it, store things, or run wiring if you can avoid it. Movement disturbs the fill and releases fibre.
• Do not remove it yourself. Vermiculite remediation is a licensed abatement job with containment, not a shop-vac afternoon.
• Do seal attic hatches and any gaps where the fill could sift into living space, and leave the assessment to a professional who samples it safely.

What a positive result means
